How a CO2 laser takes a mole off
The CO2 laser emits infrared light that is absorbed by the water in skin cells. The targeted tissue heats rapidly and vaporises, leaving a shallow, controlled wound. Because each pass removes only a thin layer, the doctor can check the base of the spot between passes and stop once the pigment is gone.
In practice the sequence is short. The area is numbed with cream or a small injection, the mole is ablated over a few minutes, and a recovery tape is placed over it. You leave with a small covered spot that forms a scab over the next few days.
CO2 laser compared with surgical excision
Surgical excision cuts out the full thickness of the mole with a margin and closes the wound with stitches. Its advantage is that the removed tissue can be sent for pathology in one piece, which is why excision or biopsy is the path for a mole that looks atypical. Its drawback for cosmetic cases is a linear scar that is usually longer than the mole itself.
The laser suits small, flat or mildly raised moles that look benign. There are no stitches, the wound is round and small, and several spots can be treated in one visit. It does not produce an intact specimen, so it is the wrong tool for any lesion that needs a diagnosis. At the clinic, a mole with an irregular shape, uneven colour or fast growth is sent for assessment first and is not lasered for appearance.
When a deep mole needs more than one session
Most small moles are finished in one visit. Deep-rooted moles are a different case: going all the way down in a single session increases the risk of a dented scar, so the doctor may take part of the mole, let the skin heal, and complete it at a second or later visit. Deep moles can also recur after treatment, and when that happens a further removal is planned.
Single moles are quoted by size at the consultation, and anyone with a face full of small spots can ask about the face-wide event bundle listed at ₩99,000. VAT of 10% is added to board figures.
Risks, recovery and who should wait
Expected healing includes a scab for about 7 to 14 days and redness for several weeks. Listed risks are a depressed or red mark that improves over months, post-inflammatory pigmentation, recurrence, and, rarely, a hypertrophic scar or infection. Recovery tape and daily sunscreen are part of the routine.
People who should hold off or discuss first include anyone with an active infection at the site, those who are pregnant, and people with a keloid tendency. Barog Clinic sits beside Seomyeon Station in central Busan, with evening hours on weekdays for people who work or sightsee during the day.
