The first 48 hours
Swelling tends to be at its peak in the first day or two, and this is when lips look their largest and least even. It is common for the two sides to swell at slightly different rates, so early asymmetry is usually the tissue reacting and not the final shape. Tenderness, mild warmth and the occasional small bruise at an injection point are typical during this stage.
Cool compresses held gently against the lips, sleeping with the head slightly raised, and skipping strenuous exercise, alcohol and very hot food help keep the reaction in check. Try to avoid pressing or firmly massaging the area unless your injector specifically tells you to. If you tend to get cold sores, a lip procedure can occasionally reawaken them, so mention any history at the consultation.
It is normal to feel a little alarmed by how big and tight the lips can look on the first evening. That first-day appearance is the swelling talking, and it is not a preview of your result. Keeping hydrated, staying upright during the day, and resisting the urge to keep touching the lips all help the peak pass sooner.
Days three to seven
Across this stretch the bulk of the swelling generally recedes and the lips start to look far more like themselves. Any bruising, if it appeared, usually fades over several days and can be covered once the surface has settled. Lips may still feel slightly firm to the touch, and small lumps that you can feel but not see are common early on as the gel integrates.
By around the end of the first week many people feel comfortable being seen and photographed, though fine refinements in shape are still ongoing beneath the surface. This is also why it is wise not to judge the outcome or request a top-up too soon — the picture is still changing.
If bruising did appear, arnica or gentle concealer once the surface has closed can help you feel presentable during this stretch. Gentle activity is generally fine again by now, though it is worth easing back rather than jumping straight into a hard workout if you are unsure.
Week two and full settling
Most residual puffiness has typically resolved by around the two-week mark, and the lips reach a shape much closer to the final result. Any minor firmness or small palpable areas generally soften as the filler beds in. If a touch-up or correction is part of your plan, a review at roughly this point is when the settled shape can be assessed fairly.
Because hyaluronic-acid lip filler is not permanent, the shape you settle into will also gradually soften over the following months as the product is broken down — a separate process from this early recovery window, and one covered on the main lip page.
A useful habit is to take a photo on the day of treatment and again at around two weeks. Comparing the two makes the difference between swelling and settled shape obvious, and it gives you and the injector a fair basis for deciding whether any refinement is worth doing at all.
When to check in with the clinic
Ordinary swelling, tenderness and small bruises are expected and do not need urgent attention. However, escalating pain, swelling that worsens instead of easing after the first days, a blotchy or blanched patch of skin, or any sign of infection are reasons to contact the clinic promptly instead of waiting.
Barog logs written records of the product used and its placement, which helps if any follow-up review is needed, and uses genuine, sealed products throughout. If you are travelling, it is sensible to leave a buffer of a few days in Busan after the appointment so an early check-in is possible if you want one.
