Why melasma behaves unlike freckles
Melasma forms broad, often symmetrical patches on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. Sunlight, heat and hormonal changes are well-known triggers, and the pigment tends to come back even after it has faded. Freckles sit as separate dots and usually respond faster.
That recurring nature shapes everything about the plan, from the energy setting to what happens once the course ends.
How pico toning approaches melasma
The PicoWay laser is passed across the area at a low setting, breaking melanin into fine fragments without heating the skin aggressively. Heat and irritation can themselves provoke melasma, which is why stronger settings are avoided. Progress comes from repetition. Melasma typically needs the upper end of the usual course, around ten visits, each separated by a gap of two to four weeks.
Before the first session the doctor maps where the patches sit and how deep they appear, and checks for a recent tan or medication that could make the skin more reactive. Photographs are taken at each visit in the same light, since melasma changes gradually and week-to-week differences are easy to miss. If progress stalls, the plan is reviewed with you before continuing.
Temporary darkening, explained
After some sessions a patch can look deeper for a while. Two things can cause this: melasma naturally flaring, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a temporary darkening that follows irritation. Either way, the doctor responds by lowering the setting or extending the gap before the next visit.
Tell the coordinator if you notice it, and send a photo if you are away from Busan.
Keeping melasma from returning
Toning lightens existing pigment but does not switch off the tendency to form it. Broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, reapplied outdoors, matters more than any single session. Limiting prolonged heat, such as saunas and very hot rooms, is also sensible during a course. Some people need occasional maintenance sessions once the patches have faded. Keeping a simple log of flare-ups, such as after a beach day or a stressful month, helps the doctor time those sessions sensibly.
When to hold off, and when dual toning fits
Toning waits during pregnancy, after a strong recent tan, while taking photosensitising medication, or with inflamed or infected skin. Possible effects include redness, temporary darkening and, rarely, lighter patches or blisters. If flushing accompanies the melasma, dual toning adds a Genesis long-pulse pass for redness, and a first trial is listed at ₩30,000. Pico toning has its own first trial at ₩39,000.
