How threads work on the lower face
The jowl and jawline area sags when tissue that once sat higher on the cheek drifts downward. A Mint thread lift addresses this directly: absorbable PDO threads with barbs, or cogs, are passed under the skin, catch that descended tissue, and lift it back along a cleaner jaw contour.
Because the effect is mechanical, the improvement is visible immediately, then settles as swelling resolves over the following weeks. The threads also prompt collagen as they absorb, which supports the result over time.
How many threads the jawline usually needs
The number of threads depends on how much laxity there is and the anatomy of your lower face, so it is decided at consultation instead of being fixed in advance. A lower-face and jawline lift typically uses more threads than a small isolated area, and both sides are balanced for symmetry.
The procedure takes around 30 to 60 minutes under local anaesthetic with lidocaine. Our lifting menu combines Mint threads with mono threads and other thread types, so the plan is matched to your jawline and not sold as a single fixed package.
What it can and cannot fix
For mild to moderate jowls and a softening jawline, a thread lift can restore a noticeably crisper contour. For heavy sagging or significant excess skin, threads have real limits, and the frank recommendation may be a different approach — we would sooner tell you that than overpromise.
Threads also do not remove fat under the chin. If a double chin is the main concern, a jawline thread lift is usually discussed alongside, not instead of, other options, and we set that expectation clearly.
Recovery and safety along the jaw
Expect swelling, tightness, and a foreign-body sensation for several days up to about two weeks, plus possible bruising. You will be advised to avoid wide mouth-opening and vigorous massage of the area for a few weeks so the threads can settle.
Threads are not suitable for everyone: pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection at the site, a keloid tendency, and blood thinners are all reasons to pause or adjust. We screen for these before treating the jawline.
