What Radiesse is made of
Radiesse is a filler whose active ingredient is calcium hydroxylapatite, usually written as CaHA. These are tiny microspheres of a calcium-based mineral suspended in a gel carrier. The mineral is a substance the body recognises, which is central to how the product behaves after injection.
When it is placed under the skin, the gel provides instant volume while the microspheres act as a scaffold. This dual action is why Radiesse is described as a collagen-stimulating filler rather than a pure volumiser.
How CaHA stimulates collagen
Once the gel carrier is gradually absorbed, the CaHA microspheres remain and act as a framework that encourages your fibroblasts to lay down new collagen around them. So the early result comes from added volume, and the longer-term result comes from your own tissue responding to the scaffold.
This is a different mechanism from hyaluronic acid fillers, which hold volume mainly by attracting water. With Radiesse, part of the effect is the body building structure of its own — a slower process that supports the result over months.
Where Radiesse is and is not used
Because it is firmer and stimulates collagen, Radiesse is typically chosen for areas where structure and contour matter. It is generally not placed in the lips, where the product is not indicated and where nodules are more likely, so we decline that use at consultation to keep treatment safe.
The procedure itself is quick — around 15 to 30 minutes — usually with numbing cream and lidocaine mixed into the injection for comfort. Bruising and swelling for a few days up to about a week are the common short-term effects.
What to know before choosing it
One important point about CaHA is that it cannot be dissolved the way hyaluronic acid can, because the enzyme used for HA does not act on it. That makes accurate placement at the first treatment more important, and it is something we cover openly before you decide.
Radiesse is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection, or where there is a known sensitivity to its components. We screen for these at our Seomyeon clinic before recommending it.
